Turn your dives into action — join us on the frontline of restoring Tasmania’s giant kelp forests.
Eaglehawk Dive Centre is proud to offer limited internship opportunities for divers to gain hands-on experience in marine habitat restoration. This practical program combines underwater restoration with dive centre operations, giving you critical conservation, leadership, and communication skills. This internship runs from June to July (Tasmanian winter) , the critical season when giant kelp outplanting begins, giving you the chance to join real restoration dives.
Internship Overview
This four-week internship offers an immersive experience in Tasmania’s giant kelp restoration program. Designed for motivated divers, it provides the opportunity to contribute directly to real-world conservation projects while developing professional dive and leadership skills in a working dive centre./span>
The internship takes place during June–July, at the start of the Tasmanian winter.
This is the critical period when we begin planting juvenile giant kelp onto restoration reefs. Winter conditions provide the optimal window for successful kelp establishment, giving interns the rare opportunity to participate directly in active marine restoration work.
During your stay, all essential logistics are taken care of. The internship includes airport transfers, simple but comfortable accommodation, meals, full dive gear hire, and comprehensive orientation to local diving conditions. You’ll complete both the Peak Performance Buoyancy specialty and the Giant Kelp Restoration specialty as part of the program.
Your training begins with two orientation dives, followed by approximately eight kelp restoration dives, where you’ll actively participate in outplanting, habitat recovery, and restoration activities. As an integral part of the internship, interns will also visit the IMAS laboratory, gaining hands-on insight into the scientific research that underpins kelp restoration and understanding the ecology and management of Tasmania’s underwater forests.
Join our 4-week (1 month) Kelp Restoration Dive Internship and gain hands-on experience in giant kelp restoration, diving and marine conservation. The internship is available for AUD $4,399.
This all-inclusive program covers accommodation, meals, full dive gear hire, all training specialties, orientation dives, kelp restoration dives, and a visit to the IMAS laboratory, providing a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in marine habitat restoration at a reduced rate.
Places are limited to three interns, ensuring a high-quality, immersive experience
