Learn the skills to dive safely in kelp forests and take part in Tasmania’s giant kelp restoration.
Eaglehawk dive centre, in conjunction with IMAS, recently developed a PADI giant kelp restoration specialty course. This course offers the chance to be part of an ongoing giant kelp restoration project in Tasmania.
The purpose is to create a network of trained divers who can lend a hand at restoration sites when needed (mostly during the winter months).
It provides certified divers with essential knowledge and skills to understand the techniques, and address safety considerations involved in restoring Tasmanian giant kelp forests.
The course includes 2 hours of theory, followed by a land and pool practice, and two boat dives.
The first dive will be on one of our restoration sites, so you will get to see giant kelp at different stages of growth. The second dive is all about getting hands-on experience. It is your chance to actively contribute to restoring the kelp forest.
The price of the course is $365, and this include one night accommodation in our diver lodge and air fills.
Prerequisites
You need to be certified as a PADI (junior) Open Water Diver and be at least 14 years old, but it is important to be confident with your diving skills, especially in cold water.
