Along Tasmania’s rocky coastline, sponge gardens create spectacular underwater landscapes filled with colour, texture and life.
Dense communities of sponges, soft corals and sea whips cover the reef, creating a complex habitat for an incredible variety of marine life.
Take a closer look and the reef becomes a world of intricate shapes and colours, constantly changing with the movement of the water.
A deeper world to explore
At 30 metres and beyond, the Sponge Gardens reveal a spectacular underwater world where the reef is covered in an extraordinary variety of marine life.
Descending into the gardens, you’ll encounter towering sponge formations, soft corals and sea whips rising from the reef, while schools of fish move through the surrounding water.
The depth and conditions make these sites best suited to experienced divers who are comfortable with deeper diving.

A reef alive with colour
The sponge gardens are home to an incredible variety of marine life. Their walls and rocky outcrops are covered with colourful sponges, soft corals and delicate sea whips.
Schools of Butterfly Perch move through the reef, while smaller creatures shelter among the dense growth. Look closely and you’ll discover a constantly changing underwater community at every turn.
